Papers, 1855-1879.

The collection consists of documents from the Indiana 25th Voluntary Infantry, and letters to John and Charity Nilson. The military documents, many signed by Nilson and a William Crenshaw, include returns, general and special orders, clothing and equipment lists, quartermaster's requisitions, and vouchers. They also include a court martial finding and a petition to buy a cork leg for a fellow soldier. The letters to Nilson date from 1855 when he was living in Jackson County, Indiana to 1879 when the family had moved to Missouri. Also included is a teaching certificate for Nilson in Jackson County, Indiana.

John Nilson was born in Pennsylvania ca. 1832. During the 1850s he moved to Jackson County, Indiana. By 1860 he was married and employed as a harness maker in Woodville, Indiana. His wife's name was Charity. During the Civil War Nilson was mustered into the army at Evansville, Indiana on August 8, 1861 and given the rank of corporal.
